What Your Rating Unlocks
Your VA disability rating doesn't just determine your monthly compensation — it also unlocks access to additional federal and state benefits at specific thresholds. Many veterans don't realize what they qualify for at their current rating.
Benefits by Rating Level
VA health care eligibility, access to VA facilities, service connection established for future claims
Monthly compensation, VA health care with copays for some services
Additional compensation for dependents (spouse, children, dependent parents). Monthly amount increases with each dependent.
Access to Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E / Chapter 31) may be easier to obtain. Additional dependent compensation increases.
May qualify for TDIU if unable to work. Higher priority for VA health care (Priority Group 1 if 70%+).
Full monthly compensation. Eligible for Chapter 35 DEA (Dependents' Educational Assistance) for spouse and children. Dental care through VA. CHAMPVA for spouse and dependents not eligible for TRICARE.
All 100% benefits PLUS: Property tax exemptions in most states. Free or reduced state park passes, hunting/fishing licenses. Commissary and exchange access. Space-A travel eligibility. Many state-level benefits specifically require P&T status. Chapter 35 DEA confirmed. No future scheduled re-examinations.
Understanding P&T Status
"P&T" means your combined rating is 100% AND the VA has determined your disabilities are permanent (not subject to future re-evaluation). Check your VA benefits summary letter for the specific P&T language.
How to check: Download your VA benefits summary letter at va.gov/records/download-va-letters. Look for language stating that your disability is "permanent and total" or that you are "not subject to future examinations."
Important Notes
- State benefits vary significantly. Use the NASDVA directory to verify what your state offers at your rating level.
- Some benefits require specific application — they are not automatically activated when you receive your rating.
- If your P&T language is not present in your letter, your rating may be subject to future re-evaluation.
