Welcome to VA Claim Blueprint

What This Is

VA Claim Blueprint is a free, veteran-built resource designed to help fellow service members navigate the VA disability claims process with confidence. Every link points to official government sources — VA.gov, SSA.gov, and state veteran affairs offices. This is the roadmap we wish we had.

Why I Created It

Too many veterans leave benefits on the table — not because they don't qualify, but because the process is confusing and overwhelming. I built this to cut through the noise and give veterans a clear, step-by-step path using only trusted, official resources. No paywalls, no upsells, no predatory "claim sharks." Just one veteran helping others get what they've earned.

What This Is Not

This is not legal advice, medical advice, or an official VA resource. It does not replace consultation with a VA-accredited representative, attorney, or healthcare provider. Always verify information directly on VA.gov. Never share personal information (SSN, medical records, login credentials) on any unofficial site.

Section 2.5 — Be Prepared

C&P Exam Preparation

The Compensation & Pension exam is one of the most important steps in the VA claims process. The examiner's report carries significant weight in the rating decision, so thorough preparation is essential.

Key Preparation

Preparation Strategy

Review the specific DBQ for your condition

The DBQ shows exactly what criteria the examiner evaluates. Knowing these criteria helps you provide relevant, complete information.

Describe your worst days, not your best

The exam captures a snapshot. If you describe only average days, the examiner may underrate your condition. Be honest about the full severity.

Be honest and thorough — do not minimize

Many veterans instinctively downplay symptoms or push through pain. This works against you. The examiner needs to see the real impact.

Bring a written summary of symptoms

A written summary ensures you do not forget key details under stress. Include symptoms, limitations, and how the condition affects daily life and work.

Note that the examiner's report carries significant weight

The rating decision relies heavily on the C&P exam report. What you say and demonstrate during the exam directly influences your rating.

Tip: Arrive early, bring all relevant medical records, and do not be afraid to say "I don't know" if you are unsure about something. Guessing can hurt your claim.

Know the Criteria

Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs)

Each condition the VA evaluates has a specific Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ). This is the form the examiner fills out during your C&P exam. It lists the exact criteria, measurements, and questions the examiner will use.

Reviewing the DBQ for your condition before your exam is one of the most effective things you can do. It tells you exactly what the examiner is looking for, so you can prepare to provide complete and relevant information.

How to Use DBQs

  1. Search for your condition's DBQ on the VA website or through a web search
  2. Review every question and criteria listed on the form
  3. Prepare honest answers for each item — think about your worst days
  4. Note any measurements or tests the examiner will perform
  5. Bring your prepared notes to the exam as a reference

What to Expect

1

Before the Exam

You'll receive a notice with the date, time, and location. The exam may be at a VA facility or a contracted provider's office. Review your medical records and the relevant DBQ.

2

During the Exam

The examiner will ask about your medical history, current symptoms, and how your condition affects daily life. They may perform physical tests or range-of-motion measurements.

3

After the Exam

The examiner sends their report to the VA. You can request a copy of the exam report through your VA.gov account. The VA uses this report as part of their rating decision.

Do's and Don'ts

Do

Be honest and thorough about your symptoms
Describe your worst days, not just average days
Review the specific DBQ (Disability Benefits Questionnaire) for your condition before the exam
Bring a list of all medications and treatments
Bring a written summary of your symptoms, limitations, and how the condition affects daily life and work
Mention how your condition affects daily life, work, and relationships
Arrive early and bring your ID and all relevant medical records
Note the examiner's name and the duration of the exam
If asked to perform a physical test, do not push through pain — stop when it hurts
Say "I don't know" if you are unsure — guessing can hurt your claim

Don't

Don't minimize your symptoms or try to be tough
Don't exaggerate — be truthful and consistent
Don't skip the exam — it will likely result in a denial
Don't assume the examiner has read your full file
Don't rush — take your time to answer completely
Don't forget to mention flare-ups and their frequency
Don't describe only your best days — the exam captures a snapshot

Important: If you miss your C&P exam without rescheduling, the VA will likely deny your claim based on the available evidence. If you cannot make your appointment, contact the VA immediately to reschedule.
